Hot Dogs Take Top Nods in Summer Survey

More Family Time, Hot Dogs Take Top Nods in Summer Survey

OMAHA, Neb., June 18, 2007—With the start of summer officially less than one week away, a new survey from Hebrew National, the "higher authority" of hot dogs, reveals that time-hungry working mothers find the grill is the best place to heat up a quality summer experience for the family. Nearly nine out of 10 (89%) working moms equate grilling and barbecuing with summertime, and ultimately deemed the hot dog as the "official food of summer" on the grill1.

Hebrew National conducted the survey to better understand working mothers' attitudes about summertime activities and what makes a quality summer, from daily activities to the family meal; all important occasions that bring the family together.

According to the survey, three-fourths of moms say they look for quick and easy foods to serve their hungry, busy brood—both men and children—to truly relish the summer1. To meet these needs and wants, Hebrew National has introduced Jumbo Beef Franks just in time for the summer, featuring the same great taste as a regular Hebrew National frank but at nearly twice the size to satisfy heartier appetites.

Also available are the 97 percent Fat Free Beef Franks; just as tasty as the original, but with less fat and certified by the American Heart Association® heart check program. With such a variety of offerings available, mom now has multiple options to feed everyone in the family.

According to the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council, a staggering seven billion hot dogs are consumed during the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day alone—and the majority of working moms (80%) do think about what goes into them. But surprisingly, the survey revealed that nearly half of moms (49%) are still unsure what's actually inside, citing "mystery meat." When asked about the contents, the majority of moms surveyed suspected fillers (80%), by-products (76%), artificial flavors (66%), artificial colors (64%), and low-quality beef (63%) in their hot dogs1. Hebrew National helps remove the mystery of the hot dog meat by providing a premium all-beef hot kosher dog that busy families can enjoy on-the-go or anytime.

In a season notorious for sun, sports, and various on-the-go activities, the survey found that good weather (90%) and spending time with the family (88%) are the two things moms want the most to have a quality summer experience. The survey also cited moms' desire to share time with the kids (83%) and enjoying family meals together (67%)—especially those that are quick and easy to prepare—as proof of a quality summer1.

"The survey confirmed that moms want quality food that tastes great and is fun to eat so the whole family will enjoy mealtime," said Reggie Moore, director of Marketing for Hebrew National. "Hot dogs are a top grilling choice, but the survey indicates a strong need for consumers to raise their hot dog I.Q., or inner quality. Not all hot dogs are created equal, and Hebrew National 100 percent kosher beef products give moms a great-tasting meal option their families will enjoy and the comfort of knowing it's a quality meal as well."

Based upon these results, the favored frank provides a great solution for working moms based on what they look for in a meal option for their families: their kids will eat it (93%), it's convenient (83%), it's fun to eat (66%), and most importantly, it's high in quality (98%)1. And now with the new Jumbo option, moms have even more options to satisfy everyone's hunger.

"Hebrew National makes it easy for moms to feed their kids the food they love," said Moore. "Our hot dogs do not contain the fillers, by-products, and artificial colors and flavors that go into many other hot dogs. As a kosher food, Hebrew National products meet the highest standards of preparation and inspection—assurance your family will receive a quality product in every meal."

Every family can beef up their kosher education, courtesy of Hebrew National. Beginning June 17, Americans nationwide can get grilled on their hot dog I.Q. during Hebrew National's online "Raise Your Hot Dog Inner Quality" promotion at The online quiz will educate consumers about Hebrew National's 100 percent pure kosher beef franks and the kosher production process.

A few fact vs. fiction items include:

Fiction: Kosher beef is no different than regular beef.
Fact: Unlike regular beef, kosher beef only uses select cuts from the front half, or forequarter, of the cow. In other words, moms who choose kosher beef hot dogs know what their family is eating. With Hebrew National hot dogs, there are no ifs, ands, or butts.
Fiction: Unless you're Jewish, it just isn't kosher to eat kosher.
Fact: Regardless of religious affiliation, kosher foods (denoted on packaging by a triangle with a "K" inside) offer every mom the reassurance that the food has met the strictest standards of quality, cleanliness, and safety. In fact, the growth of the $9.4 billion kosher industry is being fueled by mainstream consumers looking for higher-quality foods for their families.
